Outdoor jazz to fill summer nights at Callanwolde

Published: May 15, 2009

The lush natural beauty of the Callanwolde Fine Arts center is one of Atlanta's favorite venues for cool jazz under the stars on a hot summer evening.

Callanwolde's 2009 Summer Outdoor concert series features a high-energy mix of classic and contemporary jazz, swing, fusion, blues and R&B. Bring a lawn chairs or a blanket, a picnic and a fellow music lover for these Friday night concerts.

If it rains, the concert moves into Callanwolde's indoor courtyard. Parking is free and on-site. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m.; tickets are sold at the door.

June 12 - Nick Longo Band - Saxophone artist Longo and his seven-piece band present originality in a broad variation of jazz styles. Powered by two sax musicians and a tight percussion section, Longo's dynamic band promises a lively performance into the night.

June 26 - Marsha DuPree - A favorite jazz vocalist, DuPree offers fluid and polished musical interpretations of smooth classic jazz and cabaret specialties.

July 10 - Serenata Band - Considered one of Atlanta's best Latin groups, Luis Cordero leads a seven-piece band playing Latin jazz, samba and other creative styles with sax, flute, congas, bongos and timbales.

July 31 - Gary Motley Trio - This classical jazz pianist is a Callanwolde favorite. Motley has worked with such jazz greats as Dave Brubeck and Randy Brecker. His trio includes Paul Keller on acoustic bass and Pete Siers on drums.

August 14 - Madoca and Company - Atlanta’s own jazz fusion pianist Madoca collaborates with The Prince Project and other noted Atlanta musicians to create exciting fusion, funk and contemporary jazz styles.
